Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some frequently asked questions about Giraffe About Town.

What is Giraffe About Town

Get ready to look up

Giraffe About Town is a free art trail featuring more than 40 magnificent giraffe sculptures that will take you on a journey across Edinburgh this summer, from Friday 1 July to Monday 29 August.

In partnership with Wild in Art, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) Edinburgh Zoo is delighted to share this exciting trail with local people and visitors.

Each incredible sculpture has been sponsored by amazing organisations and businesses. The 42 large sculptures have been decorated by artists and the 30 wee sculptures have been decorated by communities and school children.

After a farewell weekend where all the giraffes will be shown together at the zoo in September, they will be auctioned off to raise much needed funds for wildlife conservation.

When is it and where?

Can you spot our giraffes?

Giraffe About Town will be on the streets of Edinburgh from Friday 1 July to Monday 29 August 2022. The 42 large sculptures (our ‘tall trail’) can be discovered outdoors across the city in prominent central locations and areas of cultural significance. Meanwhile, the 30 small sculptures (our ‘wee herd’) are on display in local shops, attractions, and other indoor public spaces. You can use the Giraffe About Town map or download the app to help you navigate the trail.

Is the event free?

Yes!

The Giraffe About Town trail is free for everyone to explore, so everyone can enjoy seeing our colourful herd of giraffes.

Why giraffes?

Our fabulous herd

RZSS welcomed a herd of five giraffes to Edinburgh Zoo last year with support from the public and as part of a partnership the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) and Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which timed with the reopening of the zoo after lockdown.

Our charity’s mission with the Giraffe About Town trail is to help our city recover after lockdown and raise much needed funds for wildlife conservation, so giraffes were a fitting choice!

What are the giraffe sculptures made of and who decorated them?

Bright, beautiful and bold

Before they were painted, the blank sculptures were designed by Wild in Art as a canvas for art. They are all made of lightweight, fire-resistant fiberglass.

The eight-foot giraffes on our tall trail were decorated by artists who submitted their designs almost a year ago! Trail sponsors chose their favourite submissions from a carefully curated shortlist and our charity commissioned the successful artists in March.

Then the four-foot giraffes in our wee herd have been decorated by local schools and community groups.

Please be aware that, while fiberglass is strong and each sculpture has been robustly tested to withstand any damage, we are asking everyone to respect our giraffes, keep off the sculptures and do not climb on them. If you spot any damage to any of the giraffes, please call our hotline on 0345 319 6823.

How can I plan my route around the trail

You can download the Giraffe About Town app for just 89p from the Apple Store or Google Play Store. There you’ll have access to a full host of rewards to redeem when you find different sculptures.

The map is available to view and download from the Giraffe About Town website, or you can pick up a paper copy  from Edinburgh Zoo and in Lothian travel hubs or the Visit Scotland Edinburgh iCentre.

Where can I get a physical map of the trail

Pick up our printed map

If you’d like a paper copy of the map, you can find them at Edinburgh Zoo, Lothian travel hubs and the Visit Scotland Edinburgh iCentre.

The map can also be found on our website and the Giraffe About Town app that you can download from the Apple Store or Google Play store for just 89p!

Can I see all of the sculptures together in one place?

Farewell to our tall trail

If you miss a giraffe off your checklist, fear not! You can see the full herd together on their farewell weekend at Edinburgh Zoo from Friday 16 September to Monday 19 September. This will be included in a general admission ticket, so we encourage you to book your ticket now to avoid disappointment!

What is the Giraffe About Town app?

Download and explore!

Available on both iOS and Android phones, the interactive trail app is 89p to download. Just search ‘Giraffe About Town’ in your app store and look out for our purple logo!

On the app, you can ‘collect’ all the sculptures you find, track the route, vote for your favourite giraffes, and unlock special rewards and offers at the different sculptures.

What does the 89p for the app go towards?

Every little helps

Your 89p will help our charity cover the cost of creating the Giraffe About Town app. Once that cost is covered, any additional funds raised from app sales will come directly to RZSS and help create a world where nature is protected, valued and loved.

Can I vote for more than one giraffe on the app?

Yes!

Images

Yes! You can vote for as many giraffes as you like on the app, but you can only vote for each giraffe once.

How long does it take to complete the trail?

Hit your step goal

This is a tricky question to answer… Determined trail goers might be able to visit all the sculptures in one day, but with several miles between some of the sculptures, it is possible you’ll need a few days to see them all!

It’s completely up to you how you complete the trail – by foot, bus, bike or car, so how long it will take will vary. You can also take part in the Trail Challenge on your own or as a team, in one day or over several weeks! For more fabulous fundraising ideas and to donate, GiraffeAboutTown.org.uk/Fundraising.

As well as helping our city to recover after lockdown and raising funds for wildlife conservation, this trail is also about celebrating Edinburgh’s extraordinary heritage and cultural diversity and we encourage everyone to explore our city’s hidden gems and iconic locations.

Who is already involved with Giraffe About Town?

Our partners, artists, communities and schools

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s Edinburgh Zoo is working in partnership with creative producers Wild in Art to present Giraffe About Town with support from an incredible range of communities, artists, businesses and other organisations.

Artists from Edinburgh, Scotland and further afield were all encouraged to submit designs for the giraffe sculptures. Our charity’s team then carefully whittled down the submissions and presented a curated shortlist to the organisations generously sponsoring our sculptures.

Each sponsor selected their favourite designs, and the successful artists were commissioned and paid an honorarium to decorate each sculpture.

Schools and community groups in Edinburgh were also given the opportunity to join in the fun by adopting and designing their own smaller giraffe sculptures. The ‘wee herd’ are on display in shops and other public spaces around Edinburgh as part of the trail and will then be returned to their owners as a lasting legacy.

How can I get involved?

Be part of the herd!

There are so many ways to get involved and it’s not too late!

EVERYONE visiting Edinburgh this summer can get involved by exploring the trail and joining in with fundraising for wildlife conservation!
