Why is my favourite giraffe not included in the auction?

Giraffe About Town has been supported by some amazing sponsors who have helped us to put on this incredible trail around Edinburgh. As part of their sponsorship package, some of our sponsors were offered the opportunity to keep their sculpture, in recognition of their commitment to supporting our wildlife conservation charity and the investment they made to support the trail.

How can I buy tickets?

Tickets to the live event are limited and so we ask all those interested in attending to fill out the short note of interest form available on this website.

A member of our team will be in touch with a secure link to purchase tickets to this event, which are priced at £15. All proceeds from this event will help protect threatened animals around the world.

All interested bidders aged 18+ are welcome to our auction. We hope to fill the auction room with people who are going to bid so that we can raise lots of money for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), our wildlife conservation charity.

For families, or for people who are not able to bid but are interested in seeing the giraffes all together, we advise attending our farewell weekend.

You can also view our live stream to enjoy the excitement of the event without bidding.

Is there an estimated guide price?

No, but from previous trails we know that the sculpture price can range from £3k – £22K with an average price being approximately £7k.

How do I bid for a giraffe?

Once you purchase your ticket you will need to complete a bidder registration form. This will be sent to you by email. Please return your bidder registration form to or bring it with you on the night along with your ID. This will make the registration process easier on the night and means you can collect your allocated paddle.

If you don’t plan to make a bid but change your mind on the night, that’s okay too! Please refer to our guide for bidders and Terms and Conditions for more information.

If I am bidding on the night, what ID do I need to bring with me?

You must bring one form of ID, which must include government-issued photo identification. If this does not state your current address, proof of address will also be required.

If you are bidding on behalf of an organisation, you must provide a copy of the certificate of incorporation, or, in the case of unregistered entities, other evidence satisfactory to RZSS. Please contact us at for confirmation of what will be acceptable.

Please see the auction Terms and Conditions for more information.

If I can’t get to the auction, can I still bid?

Yes, you can bid online or place an absentee bid.

No commission or VAT is added to the hammer price.

Can I gift aid my bid?

No, you cannot gift aid your bid.

How much will the giraffes be sold for?

There is no way of knowing how much each sculpture will achieve. However, if you are saving up for a giraffe, based on previous similar trails, we expect (and hope) for them to sell for £3,000 and upwards.

If I’m successful, how can I pay for my giraffe?

Payment can be made by electronic transfer, debit or credit card. RZSS can also raise and issue invoices for successful bids at the end of the auction event which can be sent to successful bidders.

Please see the auction Terms and Conditions for more information.

If I’m successful, how will I get my giraffe home?

All giraffes must be collected or delivered by Monday 31 October 2022.

Our logistics partner, Purdie Worldwide, will be available during the night of the auction to organise delivery. There will be a sliding scale of delivery charges, dependent on distance.  You are of course free to arrange your own collection and delivery of your sculpture but this is entirely at your own risk.  Purdie Worldwide are extremely experienced home removal providers and are well used to moving our giraffe herd.

RZSS will send details of our logistics partner to any successful bidder who is not present at the live auction.

Can I buy a plinth for my giraffe?

A small selection of external concrete plinths are available – price from £200 plus delivery. Please note, these plinths weigh 500kg which will need to be taken into consideration when negotiating delivery.

Will my giraffe be insured?

All lots are covered by RZSS insurance until your payment has cleared. Once payment is cleared our insurance will cease and you will become the owner of the giraffe and therefore responsible for any insurance cover.

Which charity will benefit from the auction proceeds?

Proceeds from the Giraffe About Town auction will go to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. RZSS is a wildlife conservation charity with a bold vision: a world where nature is protected, valued and loved. Working in Scotland and around the world, our wildlife conservation charity aims to bring an inspired and empowered global community together to make this possible – and everyone has a role to play.

How will the money be used?

By successfully bidding on a giraffe in the Giraffe About Town auction, you will be supporting wildlife conservation in Scotland and around the world. From giraffes in Africa to wildcats in Scotland and giant anteaters in Brazil, your bid will help protect some of our most threatened animals.

Can I buy a blank giraffe sculpture?

Blank giraffe sculptures, both large and small, are not currently available to buy. This is to protect the value of the decorated giraffe sculptures that will be auctioned to help raise funds for RZSS.

Are any small giraffes included in the auction?

The Wee Herd, designed and decorated by schools and community groups, will not be auctioned and will be returned to the schools and groups that created them, as a legacy of the summer that Giraffe About Town took over Edinburgh.  We will have one small giraffe that has been lovingly decorated by our fantastic artist coordinator, Joanne MacFayden, of Tea Green Events that will be in the auction – check the auction lot list for ‘Jewels’.
