Giraffe Hoop

You can save animals from extinction!

With more than a million species at risk of extinction, our planet’s life support system is in crisis. Nature needs us to act now! Giraffe About Town is a fun way for us to join together to raise funds for vital conservation projects in Scotland and around the world.

Every penny you raise for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) helps create a world where nature is protected, valued and loved. You can help save animals large and small, from giraffes in Africa to wildcats in Scotland and giant anteaters in Brazil.

Stand tall for wildlife conservation

There are so many ways to get involved and enjoy our stunning Giraffe About Town trail while also raising money for a cause you care about. You can create your own challenges as an individual or a team, by foot or on wheels, and do it in one day or over several weeks.

But where to go?

The entire trail is approximately 50km long, but you can tailor each challenge according to your own preferences.

Remember, safety comes first. The only race we’re trying to win is the race against extinction, and if you’re participating in any way, you’re a champion! Fundraisers are responsible for their own safety, and we always recommend choosing a challenge you feel confident taking on based on your level of fitness and experience.

Our favourite one-day route suggestions

The City Centre Walking Route (3km)

Ideal for walking, this route takes you from Haymarket through New Town and ends in the heart of Old Town. You’ll see all of our Edinburgh-themed sculptures as well as a few others along the way!

Run for Animals (12km)

If you can’t get enough of animals, this is for you! Not for the faint-hearted, this 12km route connects animal-themed sculptures, starting at Haymarket and looping back to Princes Street. Highlights include the Morningside Clock, Bruntsfield Links and Calton Hill, where you can view the city from up high, just like a giraffe.

The Big Cycle Horseshoe (35km)

Explore some of Edinburgh’s beautiful natural scenery by bike. Suitable for experienced cyclists, the route starts at South Queensferry and takes you along several kilometres of shoreline, through three different parks with the Gyle as your final destination.

The Magical Meadows Lap (4km)

For those who believe in fairies! This route starts with one of our beautiful nature-themed sculptures and travels along to one of the TALLEST portrayals of the Peter Pan story. One for the whole family, stroll (or fly) along the Meadows and back, adapting the route as you wish. You can even challenge each other to see who can do the most laps in an hour!

The Water of Leith Route (9km)

Walk or run this scenic route that inspired one of our very own Giraffe About Town sculptures. From the shore in Leith, right along to meet us here at Edinburgh Zoo, this path captures the peace of nature within the city.

Scottish Wildlife Route (15km)

From puffins to wildflowers, this route joins two sculptures with a Scottish wildlife theme. Taking you along a section of Route 1 of the National Cycle Network, this signposted path runs parallel to the coast through our stunning capital and offers many opportunities for adventure. Looking for ideas this summer? Route 1 runs from Dover to Tain.

Completed the trail? The fun doesn’t have to stop there!

You can do more than just walking the trail too! If you think being a hero for wildlife is best celebrated with cake, this is your opportunity to combine your favourite hobby with your favourite animal. Be sure to download our fundraising guide for more fun ideas. You can set up a fundraising page in support of Giraffe About Town here.
