Design Inspiration

Salam was created by Multicultural Family Base.

They named their giraffe Salam, a female name that means peace in Arabic. Salam was created by the Save Have Girls’ Group and Junior Group, which include groups of girls from different countries, whose parents or themselves came to Scotland as refugees or asylum seekers due to war, conflict or political persecution in their home countries. The group decided to create a patchwork depicting how humanity can be different, like a puzzle. However, each piece of the puzzle is important to represent the whole. Therefore, this piece of art symbolises the unity, cooperation and communication that is needed to maintain peace in our planet.

Salam is on display inside the library so please check the library opening times before you plan your visit!
