Sculpture Name: The Giraffe of the Water of Leith
Artist Name: Melanie Grandidge
Location: Castle Street
Sponsor Name: Cala Homes
The Giraffe of the Water of Leith was designed by Melanie Grandidge and inspired by working nearby The Shore which connects to the end of the Water of Leith. There are many locations along the river which are nostalgic and close to her heart.
Melanie Grandidge is a freelance illustrator based in Edinburgh. With bright painterly marks and a loose expressive line, her illustrations are positive and light-hearted, in the aim of putting a smile on people’s faces. Storytelling and children’s picture books have always been at the heart of Melanie’s practice. She regularly gathers inspiration for her stories and illustrations from exploring the outdoors in her sketchbook.
Surprisingly, Melanie realised just how well a map of the river worked in this format, with the shape of the river fitting so well to the shape of the giraffe sculpture. After researching the Water of Leith, she found the audio trail and videos on the conservation trust website
Sponsored by Cala Homes, The Giraffe of the Water of Leith has many elements from Melanie’s research alongside her own experiences. She hopes the design brings together the history, art, nature and community of the Water of Leith into one illustrated map.
